![]() The reason for this is to grab the disk apces and "reserve" it. The first thing that happens, in this "creating local files" phase, is in the "downloading" directory (under SteamApps, which is under the Steam Library that has been selcted or is the default), every file that will eventually be there is created with the file sizes that will eventually filled, but with null data. So I will take a crack at explaining with a little more brevity. In the time that has passed, a few steam updates have happened and it appears they now call pre-allocating "creating local files", but in retesting it looks like it still does the same. On page 1 of this thread, I wrote a pretty in-depth overview of what I observe with steam pre-allocating & downloading, with some educated speculation of what is happening and why. im prob wrong all together minus about the certain games that make u prepreallocate, hope this makes sense to read lol so i think that its steam possibly compacting certain games to save space on there servers and when its preallocate its not just doing it so it doesnt fail half way through in case u dont have enough space but its unpacking the files on the server end and getting em ready for u to dl. so my theory is that some of the big size games dont all prepreallocate like my dying light doesnt prepreallocate even to date as well as a bunch of others i have. K so its not just games that are 20 gigs and up ,it also does it on small games like i just did grim dawn which is 5 gigs and it preallocate and took like 5 mins ,now from far as what ive seen over the yrs with steam that it was only certain games at first ,for example when i first saw it preallocate was when pd2 came out and at the time was the only game to do it for me then the odd other games started to do it like jc3 ,now not all of my big size games did prepreallocate like mgsv never used to do it for me till 1 day i reinstalled it. ![]()
